Duncan Speakman is the new resident artist at timelab and also new resident of Ghent (he is moving to Ghent this spring). Duncan’s work explores how we use sound to navigate social and physical environments. His recent work has focused on headphone based experiences that draw on cinematic styles and create participatory performances in public spaces (‘subtlemob’)

There is an underlying agenda to explore how mobile technology can be 'hacked' to create more engagement with the user's immediate environment (as opposed to the ability to connect to remote locations/people, which in turn creates an isolating effect in a shared social space.

On friday the 20th of May 2011 he has given his approach to using mobile technologies in public space. From embedded computing platforms and portable radio transmitters, to micro video projectors and mass participation soundwalks/subtlemobs, he constantly rethinks the technologies in our pockets to help us connect with the people and places surrounding us.
